He’s a bearded, middle-aged man arriving in Whitewater to attend Bean’s funeral. He’s a childhood friend of Mick and Bean. He’s not afraid to speak his mind.

He is the son of Bär and June Miller. He’s a soft-hearted, gentle soul. He’s naïve yet wise for a youngster.

He’s the older son of Bär and June Miller. He’s a leader, smart, and caught in the rebellious years of the 60’s. He’s an independent thinker which makes him the “black sheep” of the family

Married to Bär Miller and mother to Mick and Bean. She’s a strong, intelligent, and independent woman who has chosen the life she leads – a farmer’s wife. She’s a dedicated mother.

Young Bär Miller

He’s a healthy, strong dairy farmer who is very set in the way things are supposed to be: traditions, values. He’s fairly conservative and a World War II vet.

He is a caring, open-minded, wise, story-teller with a purpose. He finds humor and joy in life. He is a German immigrant who started the dairy farm in Wisconsin.

Kari is a neighborhood friend of Mick’s. She’s a bit of a tom boy. She’s intelligent, independent, and supportive.

The Lottery Spinner is the assistant to the Lottery Caller and is the one who spins the lottery cage. They are on national television. She is very business-like.

The Lottery Caller-Newscaster is a very serious and controlled news announcer-type who is on national television. He’s very business-like. He’s the one who calls out the numbers of the draft.

An old woman who in her yard owns the infamous huge apple tree. She is not friendly, and is well-known by the neighborhood kids as the witch. She owns a shotgun.
